We’re often asked what kinds of stories we record. The simple answer is - all of them.
Each piece of your story is unique, and helps those around you see into your life in a way that connects you. Because we’re each unique, our stories are unique. And they change over time. Your story today may be drastically different in a decade, but you’ll wish you had written down or recorded your story now.
You may think you don’t have a story worth telling, but you do. With some prompting and some thought, you’ll find that your story really is unique and really does need to be told.
Below are some examples of story “themes” to get your mind going. Try a few of these out and see how the storytelling begins.
Life Stories
Where did you grow up? What do you remember most about your home life, teenage life, or adolescence? What experiences made you who you are today?
Love Stories
When did you meet your significant other? How/when did you know they were the one? Tell me about your wedding - who attended, where it was, and what was memorable. What keeps you together today?
Humanitarian/Mission/Religious
What experiences have you had that broaden your perspective and give meaning to life? What is your experience with the divine or spiritual aspects of life? How did you find those?
Formative Life Events
Tell me about your military service. Tell me about that one coworker, or that one “adopted” parent or coach who had a meaningful impact on you. Tell me about your hobbies and interests.
Fun Stories
Remember that funny story Uncle Joe used to tell by the campfire? What embarrassing dating, new job, or breakup stories do you have?
Passing on Stories
Tell me about your ancestors and what you respect about them. What did you wish you would have known about or asked them? Pass it along to your posterity!
